It's always tragic to lose one of our own, but they will live forever in our memories. Here is a forum for us to share some of those special moments with the rest of the Coral Gables High family.

I can't remember most of my classmates, but I'll always remember Alan.  He was kind and sincere and a friend to anyone he met.

I was looking forward to Alan being one the few I remember and would have enjoyed seeing and talking to.

I will remeber him and he will be in my prayers - always.

Sincerely,

I am SOOOO sorry to hear that we lost BoBo ... I guess that nick name got shortened to just "Bo" as we grew older ... but it was "BoBo" back in elementary school (yes, you read that correctly).  My memmories of BoBo are full of fun and laughter - no one could be around him for 5 minutes without laughing about something!  He had a gift - and we who knew him knew that his gift to us was himself.

From Dickey Weinkle on March 11th, 2014
Wow!  I didn't know.  I saw Bo  numerous times in our adult lives.  The first was in Atlanta  when I was at Emory.  He was publishing the first alternative newspaper there and was the first inteelectual hippy I ever met.  Later, I visited Frienship House in NC and learned about his work.  Saw him numerous times in CA and OR when he came to speak.  His congregation was behind bars and they adored him.  His book "We're all Doing Time" has been a bedrock for me.

Sail on Bobo.  You were way ahead of your time.

From Sydney Carpel on January 14th, 2014
Dear Bo:
It's surreal to believe that you are gone for more than a year now.  Your birthday was just last week and was a year since the memorial services that Sita and Josh planned for you.  Knowing that your mom died just two months after you made us realize that you were calling to her because you always were such a loving son. You have left an enormous legacy in the many lives you touched through the holy work that you did. RIP dear friend.
Love, Sydney

Cyn and I were instant friends since we were 16 and double dated.  We went to Ohio State together and would see each other at least once a year until the end.  Irv was an amazing husband, and they had two beautifupl girls. Cynthia was an attorney and then an LA judge specializing in gangs. Lung cancer took her life this past December.

Cynthia and I would make up the funniest skits and lip-sync to the Everly Brothers "Wake Up Lil' Susie".  We must have done it each and every weekend that I visited her at her parent home in Bay Heights.  We never got bored with each other or our crazy shenanigans.  We laughed til we rolled on the floor !
Cynthia became so extremely accomplished and it was wonderful to see her at a prior reunion on Key Biscayne.  You will always be in my heart for the happy times we shared.  With love to you my dear friend.   Lorie

Denny and I became friends almost the day we met ... running around the track ... and it took me almost a full year to recognize that his Dad was my Demtist! From Dickey Weinkle on March 11th, 2014
Denny and I met in 10th grade in Ms. McCorcodale's (sp?) home room.

We were pals all the way through Gables and were team mates on the Gables track team.  He blazed the 330 in the sprint medley.

He was smart and gentlemanly.

From Roslyn Streifer on January 16th, 2014
I remember a sweet faced blond boy who sat next to me in Mr. Rinaldi's Spanish class.  Denny was smart, good at languages (I struggled). We had to give a speech in Spanish describing a person, and he got up in class and talked about me. I was shocked and never fotgot it.  We had a connection.  It had to do with his sensitivity, our shared feelings of being the "other."
To his surviving loved ones, I wish all the best.
Sincerely, Roslyn Streifer (Pasternak)

To my very dear & very loved Donna,

I can only write this as if you could read it.  You will always be in my heart & I am saddened beyond words that you have left us.  But you have left a beautiful legacy - one of a generous, kind, loving and giving friend.  I can hear your laughter whenever I think of you - it was spontaneous and gentle.  You were so trusted by your friends and had only kind words for others.  You set a wonderful example for me as to the meaning of friendship and authenticity.

You were the best friend to me.  I will always love you.   Lorie

From Lorie Adler Rosenberg on March 12th, 2014
To all who knew Donna, there is no doubt that she was one of the kindest, most patient, most considerate people we could ever hope to know.

Donna had a calm, peaceful, self-assurance about her.  I loved all her many qualities.  She had a special, ironic sense of humor; a dry - witty - unexpected "take" on high school life that would crack me up when I was most down.  And her smile was so genuine and her true nature, so sweet.  Donna was someone you could always count on to never say an unkind word about anyone.  I respected her tremendously.  All these qualities she learned from her Mom.  Fond memories of Donna and my love for her will always be in my heart.    Lorie

I knew Helene from Junior High and we carried our friendship on to Gables.  She had something special, a quality that was innate - more than just her charm, it was her generous attitude to all.  No haughtiness; no pretension; just a darling person with true grace.  I will think you often, Helene, with love.     Lorie

Best friends since 4th grade when we exchanged dime-store friendship rings - remember those?!?  How about those good times in GAA at Gables High?  Your life abbreviated - too long gone.

I was in Cub Scouts with Dickie and Norm both.  Later Norm and I carpooled together and I remember he had a great sense of humor and a wonderful family.   Before we could drive, his Mother used to drive us in her convertible Oldsmobile and she really drove fast - sometimes a bit scary.  We always came home from school really hungry.  One day after school we made a pecan pie at his house and ate the whole thing.   My Mother remarked about my appetite, or lack thereof at dinner that night, and she thought I may be coming down with something.  I didn't have the heart to tell her that we had eaten about a week's worth of dessert that afternoon.

Norman and I were like brothers throughout high school.  His parents helped raise me and we came to our first class reunion together.  I still miss my best high school friend. God be with you Norman. David

Norman and I were cub scouts together, Den 5, Pack 37.

Saw him on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon back in the 80s.  He was the lead ranger there.

A good guy.

Ned, I remember our camping trips in the Everglades, and I remember how much you liked orchids. I remember taking care of your orchids in 1964 and 1965, and running track with you.

From Ed Cook on April 30th, 2014
"Ned," as he introduced himself to me, was one of the most gentle and caring people I've known.  He was quiet and almost had to be urged out of his shell ... but once he opened up, it was easy to see that he was someone who really cared about a lot of things ... mostly he cared about his friends.

Ronni, you were the best of all of us. A great unifier of the different cultures at Gables. You had it all and are a lasting symbol of what was great about Gables High '64.

From Mary Singer on April 28th, 2014
I met Ronni at Ponce in our first year of Spanish.  We also were in the same Spanish class duirng our senior year at Gables.  It was there that Ronni encouraged me to apply to the University of Texas where she was going.  My four years at Texas were the best for me in so many areas.  I will always be grateful to Ronni for urging me to apply.  We reconnected via snail mail in the year before she died and I'm grateful for that too.  So, Ronni:  "The Eyes of Texas are still upon you."

                                         RONNI WEKSLER BERMONT

Ronnie always had a happy smile and friendly greeting for everyone. She had a wonderful attitude and qualities of leadership that were evident as early as the 7th grade at Ponce de Leon Jr. High.  Our friendship continued through-out our highschool years, but we lost track during our college days, and I was shocked when I heard that she had passed on.  I will always remember her warmth and graciousness.                                                                                                                                                                   Linda Nettles Jesel

From Marc Sternbaum on February 25th, 2014
Ronni was going through chemotherapy  at the same time and in the same facility as my wife Brenda (of blessed memory).  We would often see her there, usually with her mom.  She faced the challenge with humor, grace, determination and strength.  May her memory be a blessing.

From carol Korotkin zook on February 2nd, 2014
Ronni, we were not close, but we were friends through high school. You were always a wonderful and caring person who always had a smile. My 38 yr. old daughter's name is your name (spelled exactly the same way). When she complains about her name, I tell her about you and that her name is just like yours. You are missed.

From Sydney Carpel on January 14th, 2014
Dear Ronni:
You are gone now almost 20 years but certainly not forgotten. You were always such an integral part of everything Gables High -- and you worked on the 10, 20 and 30th with "our" committee. We even still make Ronni Weksler jokes!  When we celebrate at our 50th - I promise to raise a glass to you dear friend and Phi Delt sister. Love, Sydney

Stephen was always honorable, a kind and honest person who approached people with a fairness and decency.  He was singular, in that he had come to Coral Gables to live with friends of family when his father died, and he approached his education with seriousness and dedication.  He became a leader in the military, and he died as he lived, an honorable young man.  He is still missed by all who knew him.                                  Linda  Nettles Jesel

You, Tamar, Ronni (z-l), and I all started our college adventure at the University of Texas in the same private dorm.  I've not seen you since our freshman year since you and Tamar left UT but had fond memories none-the-less.  Am so sorry you're gone.

How perfect that the first song on this site was the Beatles "Help"...how fanatic we were about the Beatles, true soulmates Susi and I were then.

In fact, pack rat that I am after all these years, I'm sure I still have some of our correspondence from UTexas and UF about John and Ringo.

Susi was my version of Haley Mills... a vibrant, happy (weren't we all, then?) blond girl who should have been with us a much longer.
